News Now: Meet Jarrett and Mustapha, two rookies.

Good Morning, Faithful.

Here are the top 49er storylines for Friday, May 10th.

New and Notable: The 49ers mourn the passing of Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson.
Jimmy Johnson, 86, a former San Francisco 49ers defensive back, died on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

A statement from the San Francisco 49ers organization:

“The 49ers family is very saddened by the death of Jimmy Johnson, one of the NFL’s all-time greats. Jimmy personified the core of what it meant to be a 49er. He was the epitome of a gentleman and will be remembered for his humility, politeness, and endearing personality. We extend our sympathies to his wife Gisela and their entire family during this difficult period.”
Jarrett Kingston, a NorCal native, talks about playing for the hometown team.

While the majority of the San Francisco 49ers’ 2024 draft class had to board planes to report to rookie minicamp, sixth-round pick Jarrett Kingston only had to get in his car and drive around three and a half hours south.

Anderson is located on the outskirts of Redding, CA, therefore it is possible that Kingston grew up as a member of the Faithful. However, this is not exactly the case. He’s new to both the team and the fan base, but he’s immediately embraced everything 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers selected Malik Mustapha from Wake Forest University in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, taking him 124th overall.

“You’re going to get my all,” Mustapha told president of football operations and general manager John Lynch after being picked. “I promise you.”

49ers alumnus John Taylor enters the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame.
On Monday, San Francisco 49ers legend John Taylor was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2024.

The former 49ers wide receiver joins Patrick Willis, Keena Turner, Harris Barton, Dwight Clark, Joe Montana, George Seifert, Jerry Rice, and many other 49ers icons who are already in the Hall.

John Lynch gives an early scouting report on Brock Purdy on the Pat McAfee Show.

When you think about the day quarterback Brock Purdy was picked by the San Francisco 49ers – April 30, 2022 – it may seem like a lifetime ago. That’s presumably because, since being taken with the final pick (No. 262 overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy has guided his team to two NFC Championships and a Super Bowl LVIII appearance.

It’s also worth noting that between his first two NFL seasons, Purdy had to deal with the added burden of recovering from season-ending elbow surgery suffered against the Philadelphia Eagles in early 2023. There’s been a lot more excitement in between, but the point is that since Purdy took over as the 49ers’ starting quarterback, a lot of good has transpired.
