Before the deadline in February, the Warriors made an unsuccessful attempt to persuade the Lakers to think about dealing LeBron James. According to a later source, Golden State intends to target James and other elite players throughout the offseason.
Jonathan Kuminga, a young forward who had a strong third season in 2023–2024 and met with Steve Kerr about his lack of playing time in public, is one of Golden State’s most intriguing trade chips.
Kuminga averaged 12.8 points and 4.1 rebounds on.506/.280/.688 shooting in 22.1 minutes per game across his first 33 games, 12 of which were starts. He averaged 18.7 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 0.9 steals in 41 games (34 starts) after the encounter while shooting.542/.360/.787 for 29.7 minutes.
“To what extent is Jonathan Kuminga on the table (in trades this summer)?” was the question posed to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne during her appearance on 95.7 The Game (Twitter link).
With a “nope,” Shelburne answered. “.. They’ll probably stop at nothing to hold onto him. They probably don’t even want to discuss him.
Shelburne drew attention to the fact that Golden State also have young players and potential first-round picks. If the Warriors seek a blockbuster deal, they also have options to match salaries.
Shelburne’s reporting is consistent with comments made by General Manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. in February, during which he described Kuminga as “virtually” untouchable following the trade deadline.
In July, Kuminga will be qualified for a rookie scale extension. Kuminga will be eligible for restricted free agency in the summer of 2025 if he and the Warriors are unable to come to an agreement on an extension by the opening of the 2024–2025 season.
Kuminga, for his part, declared in March that his goal is to become a “Warrior for life.”
