News Now: Unai Emery will have the ultimate word on Jhon Duran at Aston Villa amid Chelsea trade talks.

According to Don Goodman, Unai Emery will make the final decision on Jhon Duran’s future with Aston Villa.
Duran has made only two Premier League starts this season, owing primarily to the form of first-choice striker Ollie Watkins.

The Colombia international was linked with Chelsea last summer and again earlier this year [Sky Sports], but Goodman thinks he should stay put.

When asked if he could imagine Duran pushing for a Villa Park exit, Goodman told Villa News: “Unai Emery strikes me as a very strong character, so if he doesn’t want him to leave the football club, he won’t go anywhere.

“He’s a young player who has shown tremendous potential. The most difficult thing for young players is finding consistency, but he clearly has all of the attributes to be a very, very good striker in the Premier League.

“He is physical and understands where the net is. What distinguishes the top strikers is their decision-making process and the decisions they make in the final third, as well as their tendency to make the correct choices.

“They know when to pass, run, shoot, dribble, and cross. That is an area where he may need to develop, but he is in the right spot and with the right head coach. If I were him, I wouldn’t want to get off too quickly.”

Jhon Duran has a promising future at Aston Villa.
Duran may only have made two Premier League starts this season, and 21 total when considering substitute performances, but he has caught the eye.

Indeed, according to FBref, his 0.73 goals per 90 minutes in the top division this season—three goals in 373 minutes—is the best return of any Villa player to have played more than two hours of football.

That is not to argue Duran should start over Watkins, but he appears to deserve more consistent starts.

It is unavoidable that transfer interest may revive as we approach the summer transfer window, but Villa must remain steadfast and reject any offers.
