News Now: Diego Carlos stuns Gary Neville with ‘unbelievable’ mistake against Liverpool, while Aston Villa striker is teased over ‘worst shot ever seen’… but Arsenal fan …….

Gary Neville and Piers Morgan were among the football fans horrified by Diego Carlos’ awful close-range mistake in Monday’s Premier League match between Aston Villa and Liverpool.

Carlos squandered a fantastic opportunity to tie the game at 2-2 in the first half when Leon Bailey passed the ball to him across the six-yard box, but he missed the attempt.

Liverpool’s Brazilian goalkeeper, Alisson, had left the goal open, and Carlos simply needed to touch the ball over the line to put Villa back on level terms in a match that may see them win Champions League football next season.

The 31-year-old was left with his head in the turf as the two-yard opportunity went unanswered, with Opta later revealing that 96 out of 100 chances in that position would end in a goal.

Jamie Carragher attempted to offer some explanation for the blatant error as Gary Neville labeled the gaffe as ‘unbelievable’.

I mean, I think he just makes a mistake, and I’m going to protect him a little bit. I believe he is ready for me to put this in with my right foot, much like tiny Carlos’ feet here,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘It’s simply this little step he takes with his right foot and then tosses his left foot out.’

Morgan, like all Arsenal fans, is hoping to see arch rivals Tottenham upset Manchester City on Tuesday, which would put Mikel Arteta’s team in charge of the Premier League title battle heading into the season finale.

Even if Spurs lose against Villa, they still have a chance to qualify for the Champions League, with Morgan clearly expecting that will make Tottenham more competitive versus City.

Morgan took to X and tweeted, “That is the worst open goal sitter missed in football history.” On behalf of all Arsenal fans, thank you, Diego Carlos!

Other football fans’ reactions to the gaffe online were less subtle, with one supporter commenting: “That miss from Diego Carlos might actually be the worst I’ve ever seen.” Not only did he miss, but he also made the single level of contact, preventing Watkins from scoring.’

Another account questioned whether Carlos’ shot was the ‘worst miss in the century.’
