Today, Washington gains another component to its front office and loses a well-known face.

Dwaune Jones, a national scout, has joined Washington’s front office after serving as the Falcons’ assistant director of college scouting for the last three years. Before joining Atlanta, Jones spent nearly 15 years as a scout with the Saints (2005–2016) and Ravens (2017–2020). Jones also spent a few years, from 2000 to 2002, moving around the wide receiver position in the NFL.

A few years ago, Jones was profiled in this way, which clarifies his scouting approach:

Players are subjectively evaluated. It is impossible to predict how a player would adjust to a new system and a different surroundings. Like anything else, there are certain collegiate qualities that predict a player’s success in the NFL, but the system is far from ideal.

Nevertheless, Jones has become one of the league’s top talent evaluators after honing his scouting technique. In his past stints with the Baltimore Ravens and New Orleans Saints, Jones scouted and assisted in the discovery of players such as Lamar Jackson, J.K. Dobbins, Malik Harrison, Chris Ivory, and others.

Jones has attributed his achievement to his unshakeable faith and his readiness to accept failure; he refers to this approach as having “faith over fear.”
