Ex-Bills WR Stefon Diggs Sparks Concern After Skipping OTAs in Houston
Even though Tefon Diggs is no longer with the Buffalo Bills, the drama surrounding his summer activities may just be getting started.
Diggs’ unexpected trade to the Houston Texans ended the months-long intrigue surrounding his status in Buffalo. After missing the team’s summer activities the previous season, Diggs gained notice. Now, he’s raised some fresh concerns by declining to participate in the Texans’ initial voluntary practices.
“Recurring déjà vu” for Stefon Diggs
Diggs’ decision to forego optional OTAs during the previous offseason caused serious worries in Buffalo, as reported by Kyle Silagyi of SI.com. Since the end of the previous season, when Diggs was spotted becoming agitated with quarterback Josh Allen on the sidelines after a playoff defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals, the drama surrounding him has been intensifying.
Head coach Sean McDermott sent Diggs home on the first day of mandatory minicamp after he skipped all voluntary practices. Diggs returned the next day and had no more public incidents during the season. During the last seven games of the team’s season, he did observe a decline in his output on the field.
Although Diggs was not required to attend the Texans’ first sessions, as Silagyi pointed out, his absence brought back memories for Bills supporters.
That being said, reading that he has already missed one OTA practice makes me laugh and feel a little nostalgic. It seems like it happened before,” Silagyi wrote.
Others have downplayed worries about Diggs’s lack of practice. Veteran players frequently miss optional practices, according to ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime. He pointed out that Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil was one of the players who missed OTAs.
Bills Anticipate New Violation
This offseason, the Bills’ offense saw a complete makeover as rookie receiver Keon Coleman, selected with the 33rd overall choice, replaced No. 2 receiver Gabe Davis, who left in free agency. Josh Allen, the quarterback, showed some love for his new colleague, adding that Coleman is exactly what the Bills need to improve their passing game.
“I believe his style of play is exactly what our offense needed,” Allen stated during an NFL Network appearance. “Talking with our general manager, Brandon Beane, our offensive coordinator, Joe Brady, our quarterbacks coach, Ronald Curry, and, of course, coach Sean McDermott, a big-bodied guy who can win one a back-shoulder fade and isn’t afraid to be a physical wide receiver.”
Notwithstanding Diggs and Davis’ exits, Allen stated that the team has gathered a “solid” core of wide receivers and that the other offseason signings would help round out the wide receiver room.
“I believe you pair him with some of the guys we have in our room right now. Mack Hollins’ mentality and infectious mindset have been such a great addition to that room so far,” Allen remarked. “Curtis Samuel has been arriving at work prepared each and every day. Now that you start putting those guys in the mix with Coleman and Dawson (Knox), we should have a fairly cohesive group.
