Video of Ryan Poles’ reaction to Falcons selecting Michael Penix Jr. goes viral
Ryan Poles, general manager of the Chicago Bears, appeared as shocked as the rest of us when Michael Penix Jr. was taken by the Atlanta Falcons with the eighth overall choice.
Video from the Bears’ war room during the 2024 NFL Draft was released on Thursday by the team’s official X account. In the video, Bears executives Poles and others could be seen tensely hoping that Rome Odunze, a wide receiver from Washington, would come to them at number nine.
Odunze would be selected by the New York Giants at number five, according to Poles’ “gut.” After the Giants selected LSU’s Malik Nabers, Poles was overjoyed.
However, Poles’ response to the Falcons’ selection at 1:17 in the video was possibly the most fascinating aspect of it all. Atlanta appeared to be a team capable of pursuing the wide receiver from Washington. Rather, they targeted Odunze’s college quarterback.
Poles’ mouth dropped open in shock that the Falcons had selected Penix. Poles and the other Bears war room members welcomed their team’s landing of Odunze after a brief period of astonishment.
In his last season at Washington, Odunze set a record for receiving yards in the NCAA. For 1,692 yards and 13 touchdowns, he caught 92 receptions.
Penix was chosen by the Falcons in a way that confused fans and journalists alike. Kirk Cousins, who the Falcons inked to a huge contract just one month earlier, appeared to be taken aback by the decision.
