These five players might not be available to assist in 2025, but Seattle will be going through a transitional season in 2024.
The Seattle Seahawks are one of the NFL clubs most in transition right now. Maybe only the New England Patriots are, to be fair. After 14 seasons, Pete Carroll was fired as head coach of Seattle, and the squad will have a number of new starters.

Naturally, Seattle signed some free agents this offseason that will benefit the team, and some that won’t work out. Every season is the same. This year is different though, since Seattle signed almost entire groups of players at positions where the team intends for them to become long-term starters.

Inside linebacker, safety slots (particularly if Mike Macdonald employs a lot of three-safety sets; two of the safeties are new to the squad), and the offensive line will all be starting new for Seattle. If the Seahawks are to have any hope of making the playoffs, they will need to have a strong class of free agents in 2024. However, in Seattle, the next five guys might be one and done.

The fact that the Seahawks signed Dodson to a one-year contract worth up to $4,260,000 is not the only reason for the risk the team is taking on him. Pro Football Focus (subscription required) reports that the linebacker who rated as the best linebacker in the NFL in 2023 may find it to be a steal. However, PFF grades can be incredibly deceptive. Only a few years have passed since Ryan Neal, while he was with Seattle, was rated as the best safety.

Strangely, when Neal got the best rating, he hardly started over half of his team’s games, much like Dodson did the previous season. Is there a bug in PFF where a player’s grade is improved if they do well but don’t play a lot? Neal’s experience and Dodson’s were identical in terms of risk. In 2023, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ safety was appalling, and in 2024, Dodson might be a disaster for Seattle.

Additionally, Dodson will be the Seahawks’ defensive end, representing Mike Macdonald on the field as the green dot. For the first time in his career, Dodson will not only be the team’s expected starter at the start of the season, but he also needs to be a leader. The linebacker has the potential to be a Pro Bowl player this season because he can cover effectively, performs well in blitz schemes, and doesn’t miss many tackles. or an enormous bust.
