News Now: The €50 million ‘outsider’ in Milan’s quest to find a new striker

AC Milan’s search for a new centre-forward continues, with management working to find the perfect profile and deal.

According to this morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below), Milan is on the verge of withdrawing from the Joshua Zirkzee race due to the commissions demanded by his entourage and the fact that Bayern Munich is strongly considering bringing him back for €25 million.

The publication goes on to discuss possible names for Geoffrey Moncada and his team, including Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy, RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, and Lille’s Jonathan David.

Much like Paulo Fonseca’s name was in the new head coach negotiations, there is one name that will not go away: Santiago Gimenez, the ‘outsider’.

Last season, the Mexican international with Feyenoord scored 23 goals in 30 Eredivisie games. From Cruz Azul, he transferred to Rotterdam in the summer of 2022, making Milan his first elite club.

However, the Rossoneri are not the only ones who have taken note of him; several prominent European teams have scouted him this season, with the Dutch side setting a €50 million asking price. However, Milan does have a budget.

Milan wants to fix midfield balance, so Bennacer leaves and a new acquisition joins.

According to one source, AC Milan could trade Ismael Bennacer this summer and utilize the funds to sign a more defensive-minded successor.

This morning’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) includes a segment headlined ‘The Diavolo’s idea: Fofana for Bennacer’. Milan is looking for a defensive midfielder, and Youssouf Fofana is a popular choice among the management.

The 25-year-old has established himself as a pillar of Monaco’s Champions League squad, which finished second this season, and he also plays for the French national team. He would cost roughly €25 million, given that he has only a year left on his contract.

According to the article, the signing of Fofana might be financed by the sale of Ismael Bennacer, who is still said to be leaving Milan after half a decade there.

In addition to Fofana, Milan’s midfield targets include Basel’s Renato Veiga. The Portuguese midfielder, who is about to turn 21, has been on the Rossoneri’s radar for some time and has been being monitored this season.

He is an option to consider for the upcoming mercato, especially with the nearly probable arrival of his compatriot Paulo Fonseca.
