Why Titans head coach Brian Callahan hired his father as offensive line coach was not a given.

Brian Callahan has led the Tennessee Titans into a new era. The long-time Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator now gets the chance to make his mark on the Titans. One offseason decision that seemed apparent was the hiring of Brian’s father, Bill Callahan, as Tennessee’s new offensive line coach. Apparently, this hire almost did not materialize.

The Titans’ head coach, Brian Callahan, recently spoke on The Adam Schefter Podcast. He talked with Schefter about a range of things, including hiring his father, Bill, as an offensive line coach.

“Yeah, it was a huge hire for me,” Callahan remarked of hiring his father. The previous year, he reportedly discussed becoming Brian’s offensive line coach with Bill. At the time, Brian Callahan was interviewing for head coaching positions in Indianapolis and Arizona.
Initially, Bill Callahan did not want to leave the Browns.
“I’m very happy here.” According to his son, Bill Callahan enjoys working for Kevin Stefanski as well as in Cleveland.
Brian thought that his father expected him to do things on his own, as he did throughout his NFL career. The two had never worked together before joining forces with the Titans.

Bill and Brian discussed the potential of working together again during this offseason’s hiring cycle, but Bill had not changed his mind.

According to Brian Callahan, his father intended Brian’s first head coaching hiring to be a personal triumph. He didn’t want to overshadow his son.

Brian Callahan, on the other hand, believes that his father changed his mind after viewing his initial press conference. Bill then spoke with Kevin Stefanski and Andrew Berry in Cleveland and was granted permission to leave the Browns for the Titans.

What a touching father-son story right before Father’s Day.

If the Titans wish to compete in 2024, they will need to start the season on a hot streak.

The Titans are under enormous pressure to make positive strides in Callahan’s first year as head coach.

Tennessee concluded the 2023 season with a 6-11 record, finishing last in the AFC South. While the record was comparable to the previous year, all three divisional opponents made significant improvements and left the Titans in the dust.

There will most certainly be some growing pains in 2024. Callahan introduces a new system to Tennessee, so veterans must master a new playbook. Tennessee has also added a slew of new faces this summer, who will need to gel together under the new management. There is a lot to like, but the Titans may need patience.

QB Will Levis exhibited moments of brilliance 2023, but was quite erratic. Levis will need to significantly improve his game in 2024 for the Titans offense to function at a good level.

Tennessee’s schedule presents a unique challenge to the team. They only have four games before their Week 5 bye (at Chicago, vs. New York Jets, vs. Packers, and at Dolphins). To position themselves well in the AFC South standings, the Titans will need to win at least a few games during that early stretch.
