News Now: The Steelers have decided to renew one of the staff members’ contracts for……

The Pittsburgh Steelers chose to give Cameron Sutton a second shot, bringing him back to the team months after he was arrested on a domestic abuse warrant and released by the Detroit Lions.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin returned to his personal friendship with Sutton, and due diligence led the veteran CB back to Pittsburgh. This was enough for the Steelers to feel confident in bringing Sutton back.

“There have not been any recent conversations; it is the entirety of our relationship,” Tomlin stated, according to a Steelers transcript given by the organization. “I met this guy in Knoxville, man, six, seven years ago, whatever, after he got out of school. He’s a fantastic person. He enjoys football.

“It’s probably the totality of our relationship and I probably represent the sentiment of the organization and saying that it’s less about specific conversations, particularly of late, and it’s about the relationship established over a longer period of time.”

Sutton spent his first six seasons with the Steelers before joining the Lions in free agency last offseason. He was released by the Lions in March after surrendering to police enforcement after a week-long search because he had a warrant for his arrest on domestic violence charges.

After his charges were lowered from felony to misdemeanor battery, the Steelers cornerback surrendered and entered a pretrial diversion program. Sutton was also ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation as part of the deal.

The Steelers signed Sutton to a one-year contract earlier this month. The Steelers are aware that Sutton could face penalty from the league.

When asked if the Steelers are comfortable with their method, Tomlin responded as best he could.

“That’s just due diligence,” Tomlin remarked. “That’s exactly what should happen. “Obviously, he is here.”
