So Sad: Are the Celtics in risk of losing assistant coach Sam Cassell to an Eastern Conference rival?

The Boston Celtics can win the NBA championship with a victory in Game 4 of the Finals on Friday night, but it may also be their last game with assistant coach Sam Cassell.
Veteran NBA writer Marc Stein told Substack on Thursday that the Milwaukee Bucks are anticipated to make a “significant” offer to Cassell this offseason. According to reports, Cassell would be offered the position as lead assistant coach for Milwaukee.

Cassell, 54, is in his first season as Boston’s assistant. However, he already has a decade and a half of NBA assistant coaching experience and a long history with Milwaukee head coach Doc Rivers, his former Celtics coach. Cassell has worked as an assistant under Rivers with both the Los Angeles Clippers and the Philadelphia 76ers (nine seasons total). He previously played for the Bucks from 1999 to 2003.

Milwaukee has already hired a well-known figure to supposedly serve as Rivers’ lead assistant, so it is unclear whether this will change if Cassell joins them. However, it is evident that the Celtics are being targeted for staffing talent. After the season, lead Boston assistant Charles Lee will take over as head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, and consultant Jeff Van Gundy is being pursued by a Western Conference team. It appears that Cassell may be the next NBA player to accept a job elsewhere.
