‘He’s been treated disgracefully,’ Ricky blows up at Blues selectors after Raiders backrower ousted.

Former NSW coach Ricky Stuart has slammed the Blues for their handling of axed Raiders backrower Hudson Young.

Young was dumped by NSW selectors after losing his second series in a row, and Canberra Stuart believes his player has been “treated disgracefully”.

The Blues must win in Melbourne on Wednesday to force a final, and Young was one of three players benched for Game 2.

NSW has long been chastised for failing to implement Queensland’s famed ‘pick and stick’ policy, and Stuart has fought hard for Young.

“I personally think the way he’s been treated in Origin over the last two series has been disgraceful,” Stuart told the audience.

“They want loyalty and enthusiasm for the jumper, but you also have to contribute a little. The amount of game time he’s spent in both series and then discovering himself – it’s either a bad choice or they haven’t done the proper thing for the kid.

“He handled it much better than I would, I can guarantee you.

“I was disappointed for Hudson.” He won’t say it, but you have to demonstrate a little amount of loyalty and passion if you want it (in return).

Sharks duo Nicho Hynes and Camerorn McInnes were both let go, with James Tedesco and Joseph Suaalii rounding off the five alterations.

But what makes Stuart’s not-so-subtle jab at rookie NSW coach Michael Maguire more noteworthy is that the latter worked as an assistant in Canberra last year.

Stuart and Maguire worked closely together in the capital and have a solid relationship, but it didn’t stop the veteran Raiders coach from making a public remark.

Young had one of the worst games of his career in the Raiders’ 34-16 loss to the Cowboys last Saturday, which would have sealed his destiny with the Blues.

However, Stuart believes Young’s performance was merely a result of trying too hard, and he expects him to bounce back against the resurgent Wests Tigers on Sunday.

“That (passion) is never to be questioned,” Stuart stated.

“You witness his passion, standards, and drive every week. His competitive nature often gets him a terrible reputation for fighting so hard for every scrap that comes his way. But I love having him here, and we’re very fortunate to have him this weekend.”
