JUST NOW: Three Detroit Lions players who could be fired before….

A rookie might push these three Lions players, potentially putting them out of work.

The draft has been the defining feature of Brad Holmes’ stint as Detroit Lions general manager, as well as the driving factor behind the team’s success. Cornerstone components were introduced to each of his first three drafts (2021-2023), and the 2024 draft class should include some more (Terrion Arnold, Ennis Rakestraw, etc.).

Arnold is a predicted starter at cornerback, while Rakestraw is also expected to play a key role right away. Giovanni Manu is an offensive line project, running back Sione Vaki is a versatile player, defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo might compete for an early role, and guard Christian Mahogany could be a potential starter.

However, another flood of youthful talent generates competition, and established players may lose their role or even their roster spot.

Let’s take a look at three Lions veterans who could lose their jobs to rookies this season.

Yes, I understand: “Who cares about the long snapper?” The answer is no one, unless a botched snap results in a game-changing blunder. Daly has been the Lions’ regular long snapper for the previous three seasons, having beaten out Don Muhlbach in 2021. A knee injury cut short his 2023 season, forcing his camp competition from the previous year (Jake McQuaide) to continue it.

Daly figures to be the Lions’ long snapper again this season. However, they did sign Hogan Hatten as an undrafted rookie, and based on the short look reporters got at the kicking game during OTAs, it appeared Daly struggled while Hatten was sharper.

If the difference in performance between the two persists during camp/preseason games, Hatten cannot be ruled out as the winner of a meaningful competition.
