SAD NEWS: Track and Field has lost there best mysteriously this morning.

With her talent and kindness, the late beloved former collegiate track star left behind a lasting legacy.
Because life is fleeting, the unexpected death of a brilliant young person has shocked the California Polytechnic State University community.

Retired track star and exceptional student-athlete who played for the Cal Poly Mustangs, tragically died at the age of 23.

Only a few months after receiving her master’s degree, the adored sprinter passed away on September 24. She will always be remembered for her unwavering enthusiasm and spirit.

On Friday, September 27, the athletic department at Cal Poly announced her passing.

Although Shelby Daniele, a six-time All-Big West honoree and two-time Big West champion, left a lasting impression on the track, her off-track persona struck a chord with those closest to her.

In a touching Instagram post, the school noted, “Shelby graduated from Cal Poly this spring with her master’s in agriculture with distinction. She was an exceptional student-athlete on the track and field team for five years.”

In addition to being a two-time Big West champion, a six-time All-Big West selection, a team captain, and a school record holder, she was also an amazing leader and teammate.

Emotionally charged, the ode highlighted not only her accomplishments but also her lively and kind personality.

Family, friends, and teammates all respected Shelby for her intense competitive spirit and her genuine concern for everyone around her. Her passing has left a vacuum in their hearts.

The institution went on, “She had a remarkable heart, cared deeply for those around her, and was a role model for so many.”

“Shelby was truly one of a kind and will be missed dearly by everyone in the Cal Poly community.”

Shelby’s abilities were first noticed at Buchanan High School in Fresno, California, where she was a key member of the track and field team, prior to her enrollment at Cal Poly.

Brian Weaver, her high school track coach, recalled Shelby as a determined and passionate young athlete who mentored her peers and supported them through tough times.

“She was a big part of our family,” Weaver told local news outlet Your Central Valley.

“It was a great athlete coaching experience for me because we had to get through some things together. That is a memory that I will have forever.”

As a high school athlete, Shelby led her team to a state championship in 2019, clinching the title with a first-place finish in the 200-meter race.

Her raw talent, combined with a fierce work ethic, set her apart. But it was her character that stood out the most to those who knew her.

“She mentored so many athletes. Kept them going when times were tough — after graduating she would take her personal time to come say hi to all the coaches and athletes. She was an extremely, extremely fierce competitor but had so much love and joy for every person that she was around,” Weaver added.

Weaver shared a bittersweet memory of having seen Shelby just a week before her passing.

“She always made time for her old coach,” he said, his voice heavy with sorrow.
