Wilx, Lansing, Mich. Tens of millions of individuals have yet to fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, which began five years ago.
Michigan State University and Corewell Health collaborated to investigate the consequences of prolonged COVID in order to determine why this occurs.
We frequently hear from long-term COVID patients, “I feel discounted.” Dr. Michael Lawrence, a neuropsychologist at Corewell Health, stated, “I feel discounted by society, the medical community, and my family because I keep going to see doctors, they keep running tests, and they keep saying everything is normal, but I don’t feel normal.”
Lawrence, along with two researchers from Michigan State University worked together to conduct a controlled study; comparing inflammation and brain stress responses in long COVID-19 patients and COVID patients who have fully recovered.
“We discovered two biomarkers, two blood markers that distinguish these individuals, which is one of the most intriguing aspects of our study,” Lawrence said.
Although the trial is limited, Lawrence stated that he wants to see more patients.
“The question then becomes: can we give a blood test to individuals who develop COVID early on to predict those who may struggle and those who may not in the event that these blood biomarkers continue to show differences?” Lawrence stated.
giving medical professionals the opportunity to aid those in need so they don’t feel powerless for months or even years.
