Josh Battle, a crucial position player for St Kilda, was formally signed by Hawthorn on Friday through free agency.
For the most part of the 2024 season, Battle has been contemplating his future, but the Hawks’ incredible journey from 0–5 to the semifinals most likely had a significant influence on his choice.
After playing 123 games for the Saints over the course of eight seasons, the 26-year-old came in third place in this year’s best and fairest list, just behind Callum Wilkie and Jack Sinclair.
With his ability to play both ends of the field to great effect for the red, white, and black, Battle will fit right in with Sam Mitchell’s squad.
It is believed that Hawthorn would utilize the right-footer defensively, which will probably free up players like Josh Weddle and James Sicily.
The Hawks intend to acquire Tom Barrass via trade from the West Coast, making the Battle acquisition one of the team’s two greatest coups.
Pick 8 will be given to St Kilda as payment for losing Battle.
List manager Mark McKenzie formally welcomed Battle to the team, and the Hawks are thrilled about his potential and what he can provide to the team.
“We’re excited to have Josh, his partner Casey, and their kids, Bobbi and Billie, join the Hawks at last,” McKenzie stated.
“We saw Josh as a crucial addition to our team, and we’re happy he’s decided to continue his career with the Hawks.
Josh is a seasoned player with over eight seasons at the highest level of competition. He will immediately improve our back six while also strengthening our club as a whole.
“Josh is a high calibre individual who will positively influence our club’s direction going forward, in addition to his talents.”
