Sam Williams is out with an injury, so the Dallas Cowboys are adding an experienced defensive end to the roster.
The Cowboys are signing 29-year-old defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. On Thursday, August 1, Carl Lawson, Justin Hollins, Shaka Toney, and Muhammad were among the pass rushers with whom Dallas worked out. Muhammad will assist in stepping in for injured Williams, who sustained an ACL injury that ended his season on Sunday, July 28, during training camp practice.
On Thursday, August 1, Schefter reports, “Cowboys are signing former Colts free-agent defensive end Al Quadin Muhammad to a one-year deal.”
Al-Quadin Muhammad Has Faced Three Suspensions
Muhammad spent a significant amount of his college career on the suspension list before making his NFL debut in 2017 as a sixth-round selection by the New Orleans Saints. Following a confrontation with a teammate during the 2014 season, he was given a season-long suspension after making five appearances in his Miami Hurricanes rookie campaign in 2013. He was suspended for the 2016 season and ultimately expelled for breaking NCAA regulations after playing the whole 2015 season, during which he recorded 54 tackles and five sacks.
The six-foot four Since joining the NFL, Muhammad has had a journeyman career. He played his debut season in 2017 with the Saints and then played four years with the Indianapolis Colts. After that, Muhammad played for the Chicago Bears in 2022 and 2023 before making a second appearance with the Colts.
Muhammad’s suspension from the NFL for using performance-enhancing drugs began at the end of the 2023 season.
Muhammad has accumulated 157 tackles and 12 sacks in 84 games played, 34 starts, over his NFL career.
Additionally, Cowboys Sign Former Commanders DE Shaka Toney
In response to Williams’ injury that ended his season, the Cowboys have signed another seasoned pass-rusher.
Defensive end Shaka Toney is being signed by the Cowboys, according to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports.
On Thursday, August 1, Anderson writes, “I’m told the Cowboys are planning to sign DE Shaka Toney today as well, per source.”
Toney, who is 26 years old, was previously selected by the Washington Commanders in the seventh round of the draft. Over the course of two seasons, and in 26 games and one start, Toney recorded 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks with the Commanders. During the 2022 season, he also saw 73% of the special teams snaps.
However, after placing bets on games for the 2023 season, the league suspended 6-foot-2 Toney indefinitely. A few days later, the Commanders released him after he had been reinstated earlier in the year.
Update on the Contract Talks for CeeDee Lamb
According to a Schefter update, the Cowboys are still determined to strike a deal with holdout CeeDee Lamb, but it isn’t “close.”
Lamb is still not in camp with the Dallas Cowboys, according to Schefter, who stated as much on SportsCenter on July 31. Regarding the value that CeeDee Lamb would bring to Dallas in the forthcoming season, the two parties are still at odds.
Figuring out the contract shouldn’t be that difficult. The majority of people in the league think that the two parties will eventually be able to come to an agreement so that CeeDee Lamb may return to training camp. However, he is still unable to be found, and the parties do not seem to be close.
Lamb just finished a career-best season in which he recorded 12 touchdowns and a league-high 135 receptions for 1,749 receiving yards. The 25-year-old is about to enter the last year of his rookie deal, which will pay him slightly less than $18 million in 2024. According to Spotrac, lamb’s market worth is $34 million every season over four years, or more than $136 million.
