The Minnesota Vikings have secured running back Aaron Jones with a two-year, $20 million contract, including $13 million guaranteed. This extension ensures Jones remains a pivotal part of the Vikings’ offense through the 2026 season.
Jones, 30, joined the Vikings in March 2024 after a seven-season tenure with the Green Bay Packers. In his inaugural year with Minnesota, he achieved career highs with 255 rushing attempts and 1,138 rushing yards over 17 games. He also recorded five rushing touchdowns and 51 receptions for 408 receiving yards, totaling 1,546 scrimmage yards.
His performance placed him among the elite, as he became only the third rusher in Vikings history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in his first season with the team, following Adrian Peterson in 2007 and Chester Taylor in 2006. Jones also played in every game, marking just the second time in his career achieving this feat.
The Vikings’ decision to re-sign Jones comes amid significant developments, including their choice not to franchise tag quarterback Sam Darnold and the speculation surrounding former Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers potentially joining the team. Jones’ return bolsters an offense already featuring standout receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, making the Vikings an attractive destination for top free-agent quarterbacks.
Jones’ consistent performance over his career, which includes surpassing 1,000 rushing yards in multiple seasons and earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2020, has solidified his reputation as a reliable and versatile running back. His return to the Vikings is expected to have a positive impact on the team’s offensive dynamics in the upcoming seasons.
