NEWS NOW: “My biggest inspiration”: the hero who motivated Elton John to become a musician.

Elton John is a globally recognized name. When he took to the Pyramid Stage to headline Glastonbury in 2023, he played a barrage of hits, both new and old, demonstrating that his connection to music is not limited to a specific style but is, in fact, embedded in songwriting itself, transcending time and resonating with multiple generations as a result. His understanding of melody and rhythm is unparalleled, and as a result, we have been blessed with an abundance of classics.

Of course, Elton John is much more than just a musician and lyricist. You don’t headline Glastonbury and play to some of the largest crowds in music history simply because you have some amazing songs; there’s a lot more to it. John was a flamboyant figure who put on some of the finest stage displays in the history of live performance, full of color, dancing, and intensity.

You rarely come across someone who possesses both of these qualities. This has helped many talented songwriters gain recognition. The same is true for frontmen; there are many exceptional ones who become well-known for their contributions. However, when the two are combined, you get someone destined for greatness, which is why so many people have connected with Elton John over the years.

Creating such a vibrant on-stage persona was no accident. John had many influences, but the most notable were those who performed what he aspired to do one day: mix a lively and entertaining show with outstanding music. When questioned about his strongest influences, a few people came up, but two struck out for exactly that reason.
“The piano players that changed my life were Little Richard, Jerry Lewis, and Fats Domino,” he said, “The first two especially, as I saw them live in concert – and Little Richard stood up and played the piano, and Jerry Lewis climbed all over and played the piano, and also did some things, which is what appealed to me.”

While both resonated deeply with the pianist, he admitted that Little Richard was his greatest inspiration. When he died, Elton John wrote a heartfelt tribute that wonderfully captured how much Richard meant to him. “Without a doubt, he was my greatest musical, vocal, and visual influence.”

Seeing him live in my teens was the most exciting event of my life at the time. Goosebumps, energy, and excitement emanated from every pore.

It’s easy to identify that influence because much of what John accomplished throughout his career mirrored what Little Richard performed. His zeal, mastery of melody, and commitment to putting on the finest live presentation possible reflect his idol’s philosophy.
