No coaching position in the NFL is hotter ahead of the 2017 season than Mike McCarthy’s with the Dallas Cowboys. McCarthy reportedly would not have accepted the contract position if he had known what a mess the front office would make in year five.
McCarthy has a 42-25 regular-season record in Dallas. However, he is 1-3 in the postseason, and the Cowboys have failed to advance beyond the Divisional Round. The Green Bay Packers, the league’s youngest team, defeated the Cowboys in the Wild Card round in Dallas in January.

When many believed McCarthy should be replaced by Bill Belichick, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stood by him. Jones is allowing McCarthy to finish out the final season of his deal. It’s the same business strategy that quarterback Dak Prescott will most likely use this season with Dallas, as he and teammates CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons have yet to sign new contracts.

While he was on the hot seat, the Cowboys elected to let important players leave in free agency and did not sign any free agents in the first wave. The Cowboys are adhering to their goal of building through the draft, and McCarthy’s hopes hinge on rookie skill.
The Cowboys are clearly attempting to facilitate the start of a rebuild this season. They might have extended their key contracts and reallocated their 2024 funds so they could add players to compete with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers.
McCarthy is aware that he is in a difficult situation.

My initial instinct was, “Has Mike seen what’s happened to Cowboys coaches in the past?” Since the Bill Parcells split in 2007, this owner has been keen to hire coaches over whom he has complete authority. Jones would sooner lose his own way than win someone else’s. Parcells’ decision to turn his team around felt hollow.

McCarthy understands where the ship is heading. There’s a reason sports gamblers are betting against the Cowboys’ win total this season.
