For an extremely long time, Billy Joel’s name will be suspended from the Madison Square Garden rafters.

On Thursday, July 25, the 75-year-old singer-songwriter and hometown favorite performed to a sold-out crowd at the legendary New York City venue, capping up a record-breaking residency. It was Joel’s 150th engagement there in his lifetime. A perpetual banner honoring the Piano Man was also hoisted to commemorate the milestone.

Joel was given the marker by Jimmy Fallon, who declared, “No one has done this.” “We are here to watch this happen tonight. History includes us. Best wishes. We are all in love with you, New York City and I alike.”

Numerous celebrities, including the host of The Tonight Show, former governor Andrew Cuomo, Paul Rudd, Robert Kraft, Dr. Dana Blumberg, and former President Bill Clinton, were present for the incredible evening.

Axl Rose, the leader of Guns N’ Roses, also made an unexpected appearance. He covered two legendary rock songs, “Highway to Hell,” a 1979 AC/DC hit, and “Live and Let Die,” a 1973 Wings favorite. As the evening came to an end, he also sang along to Joel’s 1980 hit song “You May Be Right.”
“It’s been a dream come true,” Joel remarked to his residency’s almost 20,000 admirers. “When I was four years old, my family took me to Madison Square Garden to see the circus and hear Gene Autry sing ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.'” And now I’m acting in this manner. Many thanks, Mom.

Joel added, “We don’t want to go either, but it’s time,” on Thursday night. “Ten years have passed. We had no idea we would be able to continue doing this for so long. This has been the most incredible project we have ever worked on.”
