**Kenneth Sims, Former Patriots First Overall Draft Pick, Dies at 65**
Kenneth Sims, the New England Patriots’ first overall pick in the 1982 NFL Draft, passed away peacefully at his home on March 21, 2025, at the age of 65. His death followed a period of illness.
Born on October 31, 1959, in Kosse, Texas, Sims attended Groesbeck High School. Initially, he played various positions, including linebacker, fullback, and tight end, before transitioning to defensive tackle.
He went on to play college football at the University of Texas from 1978 to 1981. During his junior year, Sims made 131 tackles, earning All-American honors. In his senior year, he became the first Longhorn to win the Lombardi Award and was a consensus All-American.
Sims spent his entire eight-season NFL career with the Patriots, playing in 74 games and recording 17 sacks. He was named to the 1982 All-Rookie Team and was a key contributor to the Patriots’ defense, notably achieving 5.5 sacks during the 1985 season. Unfortunately, a leg injury late that season prevented him from playing in Super Bowl XX.
